Flappy Bird Creator Dead? Fake Death Hoax Hits Dong Nguyen After Deleting Game
Rumors are circulating that Dong Nyugen, the creator of Flappy Bird is dead. Online rumors have claimed that the creator of the mobile app that achieved worldwide notoriety was found dead in a New York apartment. Is the online report that led to these rumors a hoax?
Dong Nyugen had previously tweeted that Flappy Bird, which exploded in popularity over the past few months, "ruins my simple life." He even went as far as removing the game from the Apple app store and the Android Play store.
Repeated tweets from the game designer on the stressfulness of being in the public eye led many to believe a report on the Internet that he had committed suicide. The report, however, has been confirmed as a hoax initiated by website Huzler, which misleadingly combines satirical articles on real life issues and people.
There are several reasons that readers can figure out the report was false. For instance, the statement that Nyugen was living in New York. Nyugen, however, is a resident of Vietnam and is not known to have any ties to the American metropolis. Charges refuting this claim of a suicide by handgun came out a little while after the initial report. It is clear from various sources that Flappy Bird creator Dong Nyugen is very much alive.
The 'news' article gave a false background story to the "breaking" incident as well, claiming that Flappy Bird had been causing users to commit suicide out of frustration. The report then insinuated that guilt over these deaths had caused Nyugen to take his own life as a result.
After these rumors surfaced sources confirmed that none of those claims were based on reality, but were malicious rumors attempting to stir up publicity.
Dong Nyugen has refused to comment on the whole situation. And, unfortunately for many disappointed gamers, has shown no sign of repenting his decision to take the game down from public distribution.
