First YouTube Music Awards: K-Pop Group "Girls' Generation" Beats Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber for Best Video Award [VIDEO]
The all girls group "Girls' Generation" from South Korea beat Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber for the "Best Video Award" at the first ever YouTube Music Awards. The group is hugely popular in Asia, but American audiences were unfamiliar with the band and applause was scattered and confused during the announcement. The group won the award for best video for their song "I Got a Boy," which can be seen below. The video features the group dancing in front of various backdrops to the song.
"Girls' Generation" has made several crossovers into the United States in appearances on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and also "Live! With Kelly." The group sings mostly in Korean, but will include English lyrics in several parts of their songs.
CNN.com weighed in on the YouTube Music Awards, saying, "Artist of the Year went to rapper Eminem and the award ceremony, which was streamed live online, was hosted by actor Jason Schwartzman and musician Reggie Watts. The awards reflect the growing tendency for people to turn to the Internet, rather than television or radio, for music and video. However, according to Variety magazine, at most 220,000 people watch the event online, a fraction of the 10.1 million who tuned in for the MTV Video and Music Awards in August."
