'Fifty Shades of Grey' Trailer Released: Receives Negative Feedback from Viewers [VIDEO]
The best-selling paperback book, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' written by British author E.L. James is getting a film adaptation. The book is the first in a trilogy series depicting the relationship of a naïve college student and a young business entrepreneur. The first book is followed by the second and third volumes, 'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Fifty Shades Freed'.
The novels are notably about the sexual practices between the two characters that involve the use of fetishist type equipment. The books have also garnered mixed reviews and critiques, with some seeing the release as generally poor.
Just recently, the book's film adaptation was revealed through a trailer released on television and YouTube. The film is going to be made by Universal Studios and Focus Features, with a premiere date of February 13, 2015 just before Valentine's Day.
The trailer however, has received negative responses from viewers in the US after NBC aired the video at 8 a.m. EST during NBC's Today program. An organization that promotes family values on television, the Parents Television Council, has condemned NBC for showing the trailer depicting sexual violence at a time when children could be watching.
"The Today show and Good Morning America and shows of that ilk. They're on while you're getting your morning situated. They're on while you're getting your kids situated for school or for camp"¦ trying to get breakfast before you go off to work. The fact that they're romanticizing sexual violence in this way is also very troubling," a spokesperson for PTC, Mellisa Henson said.
The trailer has also caught the attention of Morality in Media, an anti-porn group and has released a statement regarding how the trailer romanticizes sexual violence.
The organization's director, Dawn Hawkins said, "The implications of such a relationship - abuse of power, female inequality, coercion, and sexual violence - glamorizes and legitimizes violence against women."
Universal Studios and director Sam Taylor Johnson has yet to issue a response to the statements.
