Father's Love and Sacrifice for Son With Down Syndrome Inspires New Documentary 'Irreplaceable' Teaching Every Life Is Precious (VIDEO)
Holy Trinity Church Reverend Thomas Vander Woude's father, Thomas Sr, died saving his son Joseph, who was born with Down Syndrome, from getting swallowed by a septic tank back in 2008.
Woude is now releasing a documentary film, "Irreplaceable," which is about his family's heartbreaking story about tragedy and their enduring faith in Jesus Christ. The documentary was launched on May 6 at The Family Project one night only event.
"It's kind of humbling that our dad's story - and other families' stories have been put out there as a part of a larger picture as far a family life. It's very humbling actually for us to be a part of that," said Rev. Vander Woude to CitizenLink. "First of all, God never makes a mistake. Secondly, from our vantage point, there will be sacrifices that have to be made for these weaker ones. Nevertheless, you know the love and the joy that they bring to life that people deny themselves of. I saw this statistic recently of those that have Down's, most never make it through birth. It's a very small percentage. So what our family's experienced you with Josey is just a great joy."
Vander Woude talked about his brother Josey and the impact he made on his family's life despite being born with Down Syndrome.
"The number of people he's touched - goodness gracious. I see it as kind of a sadness - for those who our Lord gave a child such as this and perhaps did not see the gift-and who chose otherwise, unfortunately. That's a message that comes through here loud and clear: That Dad would lay down his life for his son, for Josey, who has Down syndrome," said Vander Woude. "There are some who would say, 'Well, what can he add to society?' And my family and everyone who knows Josey would actually, in incredible ways, disagree with that. It's a sadness that some people haven't experienced the love and the joy that these people bring to life. It's not by chance that the Lord chooses a family that he gives these children to."
Vander Woude compared his father's sacrifice to following in the footsteps Jesus' sacrifice for all mankind more than 2,000 years ago.
"Our Lord comes into a world of sin and redeems us," said Vander Woude. "Based on His love for us. And that's what they drew the parallel with (my dad). He gets down into the muck and saves my brother."
Last year, Rev. Vander Woude counseled a young couple who were thinking to abort their child because he was discovered to have Down's syndrome, however, after speaking with Woude the couple decided to give birth to the baby, and will give their child up for adoption to have a chance at life.
