Fargo TV Show Premiere Recap: Lester is More Violent and Unbalanced Than Expected
The premiere of new FX show "Fargo" started off with a powerful, and violent, bang. Lester Nygaard has a rough first episode, which ends with him killing his wife in an outburst.
The day just gets worse and worse for Lester. He is hospitalized by his childhood bully, which would be a painful and humiliating enough for anyone, but Lester takes it very hard.
And that's not the worst of it, Lester meets Lorne Malvo, played by Billy Bob Thorton. Malvo is a less than desirable character and the encounter leaves Lester unsettled.
To make matters worse, Lester's wife give him no slack or understanding. The two fight and in the fight she tells him, "You're not a man, Lester. You're not even half a man," and this is where Lester's bad day becomes much more than just an ordinary bad day. Lester kills his wife with a hammer.
It is a brutal scene. As Lester attacks her he keeps repeating the phrase "ah, jeez." The phrase implies some regret, but it also implies a lack of self-control. If he regrets his actions, why does he continue? Also the phrase seems far too casual for the act he is committing. It is clear by the end of just premiere that Lester is very unbalanced.
Catch the next episode of "Fargo" at 10/9c on FX next Tuesday.
