Facebook New Feature News: How to Send Maps via Facebook Messenger App
If you were to tell a friend where you would be meeting again or where you are currently located, simply forget about sending them Google Maps screenshots from your smartphone or sharing your location via iMessenger, for, henceforth, Facebook will allow users to send a location map via its Messenger app.
According to IB Times, Facebook has rolled out the service for its users last Thursday (June 4) and the following steps need to be followed to search for a location on a map and subsequently send it.
1. Frist, open a conversation thread in Messenger.
2. Tap the "More" icon (three dots in the right corner above the keyboard).
3. Select "Location."
4. Now, you can then choose your [Your Name] location, or can search for a business and then send a map along with a pin for the particular location on a map.
All the maps are powered by Apple Maps on iOS and Nokia Here on Android. It is important to note that the incorporation is not via Google Maps. However, Mashable notes that it would not be surprising if Facebook and Google enter into a partnership for location sharing on a social network.
Different from iMessage, which allows users "Share Your Location" with another iPhone user in a map that updates as the user moves, a map sent on Facebook Messenger is static. When a Facebook user receives a map on Messenger, he can open it and track his own location compared with the pin provided he too has his location turned on.
On the other hand, the Facebook Places Directory powers all searches for restaurants or businesses - the same information that shows when a Facebook user registers on the app. A Facebook representative recently told IB Times that over the years, the company has been experimenting with Places as well as its mobile check-in features.
Meanwhile, Facebook opened up Messenger to third-party developers in April, allowing app integration such as this update to take place. In an interview with TechCrunch, Stan Chudnovsky, Facebook's Messenger head (Product), said future integration could include ride-hailing app Uber. He said, "You might want to make reservations. How are we all getting there? Maybe there's a transportation service somehow."
