Eminem Turns Down Lead Role in Elysium? / Matt Damon Third Choice Behind Ninja of Die Antwoord and Slim Shady?

So we've all seen the trailer for the upcoming sci-fi epic Elysium. Matt Damon looks like he fits the role from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp pretty well.

Weird part is: Matt Damon wasn't even the first choice, or the second choice.

In fact the A-lister was the third choice for the lead.

Wonder who Damon was behind?

When the project started out, the budget was much lower around $30 million. Blomkamp first approached Ninja from the South African rap group Die Antwoord. That musician passed.

Blomkamp then went to 8Mile star Eminem. He passed. Hopefully Em was too busy working on his epic new album, which should be scheduled for a Fall 2013 release date.

For Damon to be behind two relative inexperienced actor-musicians seems ridiculous and was definitely news for the Internet world. Josh Horowitz of MTV News sat down with the Good Will Hunting star and talked about being the third choice for the role.

"I don't even think [Eminem] was my competition. I think Neill went to him, so there was no competition," Damon said. "He got the offer, but that's probably 75 percent of the things that I do - somebody else got the offer before - that's kind of the nature of the business. I think you end up getting the part you're supposed to get. The right actor gets the part, ultimately. In terms of me, I never asked Neill. I just found out about Eminem because I read it somewhere."

Then Damon mentioned something about comparing casting to ex-boyfriends and things got weird.
