Earthquake Today: Large Quake Shakes Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dominican Republic and some parts of Puerto Rico this week causing buildings in both regions to shake.
According to Associated Press reports there was no extensive damage to properties and no loss of life.
In data published by the U.S. Geological Survey, the center of the earthquake was identified as 30 miles south of the Dominican Republic town of Punta Cana and with average depth of 57 miles.
According to ABC News, authorities immediately ordered an evacuation from commercial buildings in the region.
Ground movement was also felt in some parts of Puerto Rico for about seven minutes, according to Weather.com.
Graphic designer Marina Brugal, 32, told Associated Press, "It was pretty strong. At first, it was only a vibration, but then everything began to shake and the windows began to move."
In January, Puerto Rico was also shaken by a 6.4-magnitude quake, while a magnitude 5.0 quake hit St. Kitts in April. Barbados also experienced a 6.5-magnitude tremor in February.
