Earthquake Today: 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Mexico, Three Dead, Newborn Among Dead
An earthquake hit Mexico and much of Central America July 7. The U.S Geological Survey had said that the tremor hit the city at 7:23 a.m. ET. The epicenter was a mile northeast of the town of Puerto Madero, Mexico near the Guatemala border.
The earthquake was found to have occurred deep below the surface, 37 miles down. The initial reported magnitude was 7.1, but the Geological Survey lowered it down to 6.9, according to USA Today.
The earthquake has caused much damage to the buildings within the earthquake zone. Reports are already counting 33 injured and 3 dead, mostly due to falling debris.
Among the dead was a newborn baby boy, who died when a ceiling collapsed in the hospital he was being housed in San Marcos. The other two were residents of the town of Pati who had died when their homes collapsed from the magnitude of the earthquake.
Another casualty was reported in Quetzaltenango, an elderly woman who died of a heart attack. Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina, said it hasn't been confirmed yet on whether the heart attack was due to the earthquake.
"With the reports we have so far, we can say this quake has caused moderate damage. It's not light damage," said Perez at a news conference.
Reports indicate that more than 80 homes were damaged by the quake, 40 of those homes severely.
"This quake was pretty strong. Families in the area are really scared because of the whole experience of November 2012," San Marcos governor Luis Rivera told reporters at Reuters.
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the region in 2012 killed 48 people.
