Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson Criticized by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach; 'Bashing Gays is Not Religion!'
One of the most prominent rabbis in America has come out recently to criticize Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson for the reality TV star's comments on homosexuality.
Shmuel "Shmuley" Boteach is a world renowned rabbi who was once a spiritual adviser to the late pop star Michael Jackson in addition to once running for office as a Republican. He recently came out to publicly criticized Duck Dynasty reality star Phil Robertson's previous comments labeling homosexuality a sin in a GQ article last year.
During a religion panel discussion yesterday, Fox News host Gretchen Carlson questioned CBN's Wendy Griffith if she agreed with the Bible study curriculum that was being patented with the Duck Dynasty name.
"I think it's perfect," said Griffith to Fox News. "They are just being who they are. They are people of faith. They realize that their fame could be short-lived and they're making the most of it. They're saying, you know, 'We want to take a lot of people to heaven with us when we go so we're going to do this, we're going to bring it into the churches.' I think it's great."
However, Rabbi Boteach disagreed with Griffith's views on the Robertson family.
"But on this with Duck Dynasty, they've done tremendous damage to religion," said Rabbi Boteach. "We have to stop making religion in America about bashing gays. They just have to forswear that stupid comment about comparing homosexuality to bestiality."
Boteach proceeded to express his views on the Fox News interview.
"You see the problem in America is we overlook all the heterosexual guys who are raping women, one in five, on the campus. We saw this terrible statistic that in Alaska..."
Griffith then quickly cut off Boteach, who was referring to an Alaskan women who was raped, to point out that Robertson's comments were not made in the way that the rabbi was claiming.
"I don't think that's what they're about," said Griffith to Boteach in the Fox News Debate.
Boteach quickly responded. "Bashing gays is not religion!" said Boteach. "What is religion is family dinners and combating the divorce rate."
In last year's GQ magazine, Robertson paraphrased the Bible by stating, "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers-they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right."
Reality TV series Duck Dynasty is a record-breaking show that airs on the A&E network on Wednesday's at 10pm EST.
