Get to Know Dream Records Artist: Even Craft
In the midst of a new album and tons of performances, we caught up with Evan Craft and asked a few questions about him, his new album, Yo Soy Segundo and his ministry:
What inspired you to write the album Yo Soy Segundo?
I had two works in my heart about a year ago. I took a while to develop my English album, "Giants" because it was already further along. "Giants" was an exciting and allowed me to learn a lot about myself. During the process I began to build up a repertoire of Spanish worship songs that I loved. Getting behind the "I am Second" campaign has helped me solidify how I can be useful in Latin America. I don't want to be just another song writer. Everything will fade away but music will even faster! I will be out of style before I know it and I want to have a lasting impact and be used by God for a long time. Partnering with an organization and a cause allows "Yo Soy Segundo" to have a longer lifespan and greater purpose. This is evangelical based and my hope is that even non-Spanish speakers will get behind this album and bless their neighbors with an album full of praises to the One who deserves them!
Why spanish?
Over 400 million speak spanish and it is the third most spoken language globally. California is growing in its spanish speaking population and I want to be "All things unto all men" 1 Corinthians 9:22, in a way that is glorifying to the Lord. I encourage everyone to learn a language because it is extremely helpful, but not to forget their origins. I am fervently praying for people to turn to the Lord, but I can communicate well, now, to two massive language groups.
What will your next album be? English or spanish? Chinese?
It would be a miracle if it was in Chinese. But I am looking at something of a hybrid. It really depends on what God inspires in my heart and what is most effective. "Yo Soy Segundo" is an effective evangelical tool that anyone can use to walk someone through salvation in spanish. Hillsong has the right idea about going into all the nations.
Tell us about your song, Yo Soy Segundo.
Yo Soy Segundo is based on 1 John 4:19 and my response to love God and others is only a reaction to God's love that He gave me first. Its mind blowing to try and comprehend the love God has for us and how He would give His Son to save us. Christ's example of sacrifice is what I base being Second all about. I love God and others first.
Who do you look up to in the music world?
I am a huge fan of Jimmy Needham and I will say it again! But I also love Hillsong because they have made worship music available and relevant to practically the entire world. I listen to Juanes and Jarabe de Palo in spanish for some great guitar and musical references.
What does worship mean to you?
Worship is humbling myself and realizing how much I need my Savior. Its not just for a brief moment on a stage but a lifestyle. Waking up and thanking the Lord for what He has done, but I do love to sing and dance with His people! God created man with a soul and it is connected and spoken to through music. That is why worship is powerful with music, but the music doesn't have any power. It is the God of Creation and there is no room for anything else. Whatever you think about most is your idol. I want to always be praising and thinking about the One who loves me most.
Is there a particular worship song that means a lot to you?
Deeper by Hillsong is one of my favorites. The music and melody are great but the lyrics emit a desire for a personal and profound relationship with the Lord. This year I have learned more and more about how God wants disciples, not only followers. People who trust in Him wholeheartedly. I have listened to Deeper countless times while traveling and in my alone time.
You recently did a spanish cover of Matt Redman's, 10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord). Why that song?
A pastor in Colombia asked me to translate 10,000 Reasons because he heard it at a conference and loved the song. I agreed to translate the song into spanish. It sounds almost like a hymn and is based off of Psalm 104. Redman's lyrics are genious and genuine. It is hard to not worship while listening to the melody, but even more with the words. The first time I heard the song I knew it was God inspired and I am thankful I have been able to bring it to spanish speakers everywhere.
