Dragon Ball Z Battle Of Gods Release Date: Goku Returns to Battle Beerus and Save Universe

Goku, one of the most popular protagonists in cartoon/anime history, will return in an all new movie that will appear this summer in American theaters for a limited time only.

FUNimation Entertainment's President and Chief Executive Gen Fukunaga recently confirmed the upcoming movie in a major announcement.

"We're very excited to be bringing Battle of Gods to movie theaters across the country this summer," said Fukunaga in a statement. "Dragon Ball Z has always been a huge part of everything we do at FUNimation and, speaking as a fan myself, I can't wait to watch it on the big screen."

According to DragonBallZ.com, this marks the first time Goku will appear in movie theaters since nearly two decades ago, during the height of the franchise's popularity. The aforementioned film was called "Dragon Ball: The Path to Power," which was originally released in Japan in 1996.

The newest "Dragon Ball Z" film was previously released in Japan last year, now the very same film will appear in US movie theaters two months from now but for only three days.

In the upcoming film, Goku (an alien who came to Earth as a child from the now extinct Saiyan planet Vegeta) must defeat Earth against a brand new villain named Beerus "the God of Destruction," who comes to Earth after discovering that Goku once defeated the extremely powerful and genocidal arch nemesis Frieza (the alien responsible for destroying Goku's home planet and most of the Saiyan race). Beerus wants to test how powerful Goku is by threatening to destroy the entire galaxy and everyone in it.

Goku will need the help of his friends Vegeta, Krillin and Piccolo (to name a few) in order to help him battle this fiendish foe.

In addition, the movie hints that the Saiyan hero must evolve to an even more powerful level of Super Saiyan (called Super Saiyan God) in order to stop Beerus once and for all.

Dragon Ball Z Battle Of Gods will arrive in US theaters on August 5, 6, 7, and 9.
