'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Release Date, Plot Spoilers: Creator Suggests Show Will End Before Year 1930 (VIDEO)
In a recent interview, "Downton Abbey" show runner Julian Fellowes revealed the hit PBS series based in the 1920's may end before the year 1930.
"Well, the '20s is a very interesting period to me. The '30s have been done and done and done. The '20s people don't look at nearly as much, and yet it was this strange era of transition. At the beginning of the '20s, people weren't really sure that much had changed. By the end, the Wall Street crash would change the West forever. And in those few years in between, there was this dawning realization that the world had become a different place, and that seems to me a very rewarding setting for a drama, as they all have to come to terms with the new world," said Fellowes to Red Carpet News TV.
Fellowes does not think his series' time period will change from its Roaring 20's era format in the future.
"No, I don't think it will go on forever, I don't feel that. I don't think it's about to end, but I think there will come a time when it's right for it to end and for the cast to move on and do other things. You know, there is a time in one's life. But I don't think we're nearly there. So don't do a Daily Mail on me and run a headline on how it's coming to an end!" said Fellowes.
The 64-year-old Egyptian director also talked about the infamous Anna May Bates rape storyline.
"I think we've always had varied fare. We have a little bit of comedy, and we have a certain amount of charm, you know, will Daisy have a new hat, and we also have some really strong storylines at the same time. That seems to be the mix that works. I like the strong storylines; it gives you an opportunity to say things and to make some kind of observation about the world we live in. And then we sprinkle a bit of charm and humor over the top of it," said Fellowes.
Fellowes issued the following statement to the avid watchers of "Downton Abbey" about the upcoming season.
"Well, I hope you won't be disappointed. I think it's a strong season that we're making at the moment, and I'm enjoying it. I hope they do," said Fellowes.
The upcoming Season 5 of "Downton Abbey" will return this September (presumably on Sunday September 21 or 28) on the PBS network.
