‘Doctor Who’ Season 8 Premiere Episode: Sets Record High Ratings, Peter Capaldi Cast as 12th Doctor & Time Lord

Peter Capaldi, the newest 12th doctor and Time Lord, became an instant celebrity among the viewers of 'Doctor Who' Season 8. In its premiere episode which aired on Saturday, August 23, BBC America set a high breaking record of 2.2 million viewers with more than 1 million adults aged 25 to 54.

The 8:15 pm U.K time, or 4:50 am EST debut of the premiere episode entitled "Deep Breath" surpassed a combined 1.5 million and 723,000 viewers from Season 7's first release in 2012, making it the highest rated Saturday show in history of the network.

While most viewers are pleased with the events that unfolded on the 80-minute extended episode, some commented that Capaldi's performance was "funny, scary, and exciting."

The show garnered a 32.5 percent audience share, though it is expected that more viewers were watching 'Doctor Who' on other platforms such as iPlayer. The episode also aired simultaneously in 440 cinemas in Britain, United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

In an interview, Capaldi described his character as "less user-friendly." He added, "I was keen he be a little darker. He's struggling with himself and who he is."
