Do Kids Play Outside Anymore? Camp CEO Says, We are in a 'Generation Weaned' with 'No Memory' of the Outdoors
Are kids missing out on the beauty of God's natural creation in this age of technology? CEO/President, Gregg Hunter, of an association of more than 800 camps in the United States believes youth camp is a great solution for overprotective parents and nature detached children.
Growing up in the 21st century has become about video games and online streaming more than eye-to-eye contact and hands on contact with life's beautiful surrounding. The National Center for Education Statistics state that one of the leading factors of children being home schooled is for parent's fear of their child's surroundings.
So how do parents get their children engaged in physical activities while embracing God's scenic creation and keeping them safe and learning about the creator? Hunter believes it is Camp.
Hunter's, Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA) has reportedly created a safe environment for kids who have fallen victim to bullying, while encouraging kids to play out doors.
Hunter's camps serve kids of military families, for free and reaches out to children with physical limitations to provide a high-adventure summer.
"What about a generation weaned and reared with no memory of an outdoor, "un-mediated" childhood? What about our children's grasp on reality? One of humanity's oldest problems is our tendency to lose perspective and to let our five senses and the sameness of everyday surroundings warp our view of what's real and important," Hunter points out in a written statement.
"Camp will unplug kids from the chaotic world and grow them physically, mentally and, spiritually in some of the most beautiful places in the country! Not to mention summer camp continues to be the top ministry that leads teens to Christ!" Hunter continued.
Hunter's 800 camps in the United States serve about six million campers a year. When he was 17 years old, a woman in his small hometown paid his way to go to camp and his life was changed. He was an angry young man with a chip on his shoulder and he discovered a world beyond his own while at camp. He described it as "the best week of my life." It is his vision to help kids -- regardless of their ability to pay -- to have a summer camp experience.
