Insurgent Movie Release Date, Cast Rumors: Octavia Spencer Joins, Filming Starts
Veronica Roth's Divergent sequel, Insurgent, commenced production this week while principal photography finished in Atlanta.
Lionsgate announced that the next movie in the Divergent trilogy focuses on Tris' and Four's journey to discovering the history behind their families while on the run against the powerful Erudite faction.
The summary of the movie goes, "Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris's family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them."
Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, and Mekhi Phifer will be returning for the respective roles, while actress Octavia Spencer stars as Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction.
Spencer won her Oscar award for her role in The Help. She also starred in the revamped classic Fruitvale Station.
It is expected that Insurgent will also be a box office hit following Divergent's record $260 million worldwide box office takings, making it the most successful Lionsgate film aside from The Hunger Games and Twilight.
Insurgent, which will be released on March 20, 2015, is being directed by Robert Schwentke (R.I.P.D., The Time Traveller's Wife, RED, Flightplan).
The last movie in the trilogy, Allegiant, will be shown in two parts with release dates scheduled for March 18, 2016 and March 24, 2017 respectively.
