Disney’s ‘Big Hero 6’ Tops Weekend Box Office, Beats ‘Interstellar’, Garners Nearly $80 Million Globally
The Disney movie 'Big Hero 6' premiered at this weekend's Box Office, and earned $56.2 million while snagging the number one spot from Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' film which garnered $52.15 million.
Despite being drowned by the 'Interstellar' hype, Walt Disney's newest offering still managed to bag the top spot for the weekend's box office.
The well-received movie, which is now earning millions in ticket sales, was closely based on a comic book published by Marvel, that most people have never even heard of.
According to Forbes, 'Big Hero 6' is not only Disney's highest weekend debut of a non-Pixar film besides 'Frozen', but also topped 'Wreck It Ralph' as the Walt Disney Animation's "biggest stand-alone movie debut ever."
In November 2012, 'Wreck It Ralph' debuted during its opening weekend at $49 million, which contended with the second highest grossing film of that weekend, Denzel Washington's 'Flight', which earned about $24 million.
To date, 'Big Hero 6' has opened in select overseas countries which pulled in $23 million, making a $79.2 million global debut.
Movie analysts said that the box office results revealed that there is room for more than one box office hit movie, as long as both movies have different target audiences and demographics.
Meanwhile, 'Interstellar', starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, has bagged $52.15 million since it was released Tuesday.
Getting the third spot for the weekend's box office movie list is 'Gone Girl', which had an additional $6.1 million ticket sale over the weekend, a decrease of about 28 percent from its last frame, bringing its total income to $145.43 million.
Number four on the weekend's box office is 'Ouija' earning an additional $6 million, bringing the movie's total earnings to $43.5 million.
At the number five spot is The Bill Murray/Melissa McCarthy comedy, 'St. Vincent', which earned $ 5.71 million over the weekend, giving the movie a gross domestic income of $27.36 million.
