Dinesh D'Souza: America Book Removed From Costco, Backlash Leads To Re-Stock
Many Americans have heard of Dinesh D'Souza, the famous political commentator, filmmaker, and author of several best-selling non-fiction novels.
Recently his movie, America, which acts as a companion to his book America: Imagine The World Without Her, opened to positive reviews from audiences all over the country making roughly $4 million over a 5-day July 4 weekend.
On a surprise move by Costco, the second biggest retail giant in the United States, the conglomerate pulled the books from their shelves immediately after the movie was released citing 'poor sales' as the cause. This caused an outrage among Costco shoppers who immediately took to the retail giant's Facebook page and threatened to discard their memberships.
The negative reaction led the company to rectify their earlier decision and immediately re-stocking D'Souza's book back on its shelves despite their claims of poor sales.
Oddly, the book itself has sold over 3,900 copies in Costco stores alone, with 700 being sold in the past week. So the excuse of 'poor sales' given by the company is quite weak.
Further adding fuel to this controversy is that the book itself is a top-seller in the Politics & Government category on, online retailer, Amazon. Many a person has linked the company's decision to its political ideologies.
Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal is known to be a strong Obama supporter and a major democrat which adds reasonable suspicion that he may have had some influence over the decision to pull the anti-Obama book from the shelves.
