Detroit Churches Responsible for "Thou Shalt Not Kill" Billboards After Streak of Gun Violence
After a recent bout of gun violence in Detroit, Michigan, local churches have taken an initiative to fight back against the violence. They have paid for billboards across the city that simply say "Thou Shalt Not Kill." The hope is that the reminder of one of the Ten Commandments will deter at least some of the gun violence that has been plaguing the city over the recent months.
A local minister, Ovella Andreas, told WWJ-TV, "We all have to do what we can do, and right now we don't have a respect in our communities for life; we don't have a respect for many things. But we still have to create a standard to hopefully have a consciousness about God.... Because even our people have become apathetic."
Several of the incidents involving gun violence ended in death for Detroit citizens. Recently, three men were shot over a gambling dispute at a barbershop, and a 19-year-old woman was killed by a gunshot wound in a Detroit suburb. Some Detroit citizens are even claiming that the violence is based on racial discrimination.
Andreas went on to say, "This is an emergency; this is a crisis, and we have to come together now to do what we can. I truly know if we do what we can, God will do what we cannot; but we're not doing all that we can."
