'Deadpool' Movie Cast News, Release Date: Ryan Reynolds Set to Portray Anti-Hero in Standalone Film

'Deadpool' co-creator Robert Liefeld stated at the Comikaze 2014 in Los Angeles that there's a strong chance that Ryan Reynolds will play Deadpool in an upcoming standalone film.

During the expo held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, Liefeld commented on Reynolds portraying the popular anti-hero, saying that the actor was the main reason the film was being made at all.

Reynolds first appeared as Deadpool in the 2009 film 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' which starred Hugh Jackman as the titular superhero Wolverine. His appearance in that movie sparked discussion about a 'Deadpool' film.

Liefeld said they "called me into their office and said, 'Rob, we want to meet and talk to you about Deadpool, since we're spinning it off. We know we made some missteps, and we want to get it right'."

"Ryan is Deadpool. Look, Ryan Reynolds, he's gone through that same career arc, the guy is ridiculously talented. He has a huge, huge passion for Deadpool," Liefeld said, "Deadpool's not happening, because he was a giant star. 'Ryan, what do you want to do?' And he said, 'Deadpool'."

"That's why it happened. They would have no faith otherwise. That movie is because of his passion. He put together the team," Liefeld concluded.

Test footage from the Deadpool movie that showed Reynolds in action was leaked earlier in July. It was initially created for film executives, but made its way online through unknown sources.

During an interview, Reynolds said he was disappointed, but stated he also didn't care much.

"But who cares. The movie has been in a state of limbo for a while. There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, 'Oh, so we weren't crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role'."

Liefeld said at the Comikaze Expo that "God bless whoever leaked that. Whoever leaked it and goes to jail, we need to cheer them. That movie is happening, as that guy goes in cuffs."

Liefeld also addressed the possibility of superhero Cable appearing in the upcoming Deadpool film. Leifeld refused saying that both characters deserved their own movie and also spoke that there was a likely chance Cable could head to the big screen.

"I was like, 'No, you can do them both separately. They don't need to be in the same movie'," he said, "Cable is awesome. And he will...when he appears on screen, we're all going to nerdgasm, because he's coming. They can't hold him back. He's coming."

The upcoming 'Deadpool' film will be directed by Tim Miller and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. No official title has been released, but the movie has been slated for a February 12, 2016 release.
