Dalllas Cowboys NFL 2015 News: Cowboys Acquire QB Matt Cassel
Following reports that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo could be sidelined with a fractured left clavicle for two months, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports that the team has made a deal with the Buffalo Bills to acquire quarterback Matt Cassel. According to the report, the Cowboys sent a 2017 fifth-round pick to the Bills for Cassel.
Cassel was most recently traded from the Minnesota Vikings to Buffalo this past offseason, and has been Tyrod Taylor's backup through the first two weeks of the 2015 season. Pro Football Talk notes that the Bills dumped Cassel and his $4 million-plus base salary before the start of the season and re-signed him for $2 million. The Bills now have Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel as their two main options at quarterback.
Curiously, the Cowboys made the deal just hours after team owner Jerry Jones beamed about elevated starter Brandon Weeden.
"He's a thing of beauty on throwing the football," Jones said during a Tuesday radio interview. "His passing motion and his arm, frankly, you won't see a more gifted passer, power, accuracy, the entire aspect of it. If he can basically prepare, be the starting quarterback, come in and execute and keep his head right, then I feel good about Weeden."
As noted by CBSSports.com, despite the move, it Weeden should still be expected to remain the starter, as the Cowboys just had two active quarterbacks to start the season. Cassel can be expected to fill in Weeden's former backup role.
Cassel is now with his fifth NFL team. He has played with the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the fore mentioned Vikings and Bills. As pointed out by CBSSports.com, Cassel has started 72 games in 11 seasons and has thrown 96 touchdowns against 70 interceptions. He has a passing completion rate of 59 percent and a quarterback rating of 80.1.
