Dallas Mavericks Trade Rumors News: Mavericks Have $2.7 Million Leftover, Decide Not to Spend It
With most of the free agent superstars already finding a home, other teams are still looking for available free agents to sign before the next playoff seasons start. However, the Dallas Mavericks aren't as keen as the other teams, as their leftover $2.7 million in cap space isn't exactly appealing to unsigned players.
The team's owner, Mark Cuban, won't be spending it haphazardly however as they are looking to save the remaining money they have in case of emergencies. This isn't to say though that they have given up looking for unsigned players.
"We're talking to a couple of players, but it's one of those things that if we don't get the right player, we'll just hold it so that during the season when a player gets cut, we'll have that opportunity to offer," Cuban disclosed during his talk with ESPN Dallas on 103.3 FM's Fitzsimmons and Friedo.
There were rumors that the Mavericks were interested in former Portland Blazers guard, Mo Williams, and were engaged in talks with him to try and convince the player to sign with them. The feelings between the player and the team were mutual, but unfortunately for the Mavericks, Williams was also dealing with other offers that paid more than the $2.7 million the team could afford.
Williams however, was not the Maverick's top interest and they had not disclosed who they were aiming for with their $2.7 million salary cap.
Obviously unable to bid any higher for Williams, the team has instead opted to save the remaining cap space they have for emergencies. The Mavericks could use the remaining money to sign any released players after the trading deadline, or to appeal to any available free agents that hasn't found a home yet.
The decision to save the money also provides the Mavericks insurance in case a player of theirs gets injured during the playoff season.
