Dallas Cowboys NFL 2015 News: Cowboys Lose Romo to Broken Collarbone; Bryant to be Out 10-12 Weeks
The Dallas Cowboys got their first 2-0 start since 2008 after beating the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday. Their season, though, was placed in limbo after losing quarterback Tony Romo in the third quarter of the game against the Eagles. As reported by Yahoo Sports, Romo went down after a sack and fumble and immediately clutched his left collarbone. After the end of the quarter, it was announced that the Cowboys lost their lead quarterback to a broken collarbone.
The development amplifies the challenge facing the Cowboys after it was reported early Sunday that wide receiver Dez Bryant, who went out with a broken bone in his right foot in Week 1 against the New York Giants, would need twice as much time as initially projected to recover from the injury.
Bryant was initially given a timeline of 4-6 weeks before his return, but needed bone graft after breaking the fifth metatarsal bone. As noted by the Yahoo Sports report, there was a screw inserted to aid the healing but also required a transplant of bone tissue, making the recovery period twice as long. He is now expected to be out 10-12 weeks.
As for Romo, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports that the quarterback could be out eight weeks with a fractured left clavicle.
The injury occurred with the Cowboys leading 13-0 with 9:44 left in the third quarter. As noted by CBSSports.com, Romo fumbled while going to the ground, and was hit by 236-pound Jordan Hicks of the Eagles, which drove him into the turf.
CBSSports.com points out that back in 2010, Romo broke his collarbone and missed 10 games. The only other active quarterback on the Cowboys' roster is Brandon Weeden, who foreboded Romo's injury when he said last month, "God forbid I am forced to play" after saying that he was content with his backup role.
