Colombia enters into the knockout stage of the World Cup tournament in a blaze of glory after winning all three contests versus Greece, Ivory Coast (aka Côte d'Ivoire) and Japan respectively.
Colombia finished at the top of the Group C standings with nine points after they recently defeated Japan by 4-1 in their last match of the first round. Colombia's manager Jose Pekerman is expecting his team to pose a threat to Uruguay when they face each other in the second round of the FIFA World Cup.
"Managing to win three games makes us trust ourselves even more," said Pekerman to reporters after the game versus Japan. "We feel really confident. We have proved once again that Colombia are a very tight team. We think we will be difficult opponents for Uruguay. We will face one of the biggest teams in South America and the world. They have history and great players and experience and they never give up. They are very consistent, strong and with a lot of experience."
Uruguay is looking to defeat Colombia when the two sides square of on June 28. Uruguay finished in second place trailing Costa Rica in the Group D standings with six points after defeating Italy by 1-0 in their final match, which was linked with controversy. During that match, Uruguay's star Luis Suarez seemingly bit the Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder live on television in the 80th minute of the game.
''These are things that happen on the pitch, we were both in the area, he thrust his shoulder into me,'' said Suarez to reporters in Spanish, ''These things happen on the pitch, and we don't have to give them so much [prominence].''
He may get banned from this game. FIFA is currently investigating the incident.
