CNN Fired Me for Being Gay, Claims Man in $60M Lawsuit
William Kane, a former CNN employee, is suing the news network claiming he was fired because he is a "flamboyant" gay man.
Kane filed a lawsuit against the network for a whopping $60M, alleging that he was discriminated against for wearing bright colored shirts and mariachi suits.
Kane said when he started working at the company in 2002, nobody had a problem with him wearing his colorful wardrobe. However, he alleged in his lawsuit that once his boss John Silva discovered his sexual orientation, he said that it became an antagonistic environment for him to work at.
According to the ex-CNN worker, his supervisor allegedly told him not to wear his black or yellow mariachi suit because "because it was too flamboyant for a male in our department."
Kane also claimed that a superior gave him a $100 dollar "bribe" to buy new clothes at TJ Maxx because host Piers Morgan allegedly said the blue track suit Kane was wearing that day was distracting his attention. He said he put a black CNN sweatshirt over his outfit as a result.
When Kane confronted Morgan about the alleged incident, he said Morgan made the following statement.
"I love your track suits. ... I want Billy [Kane] to wear the brightest colored clothing when working on my show," according to the NY Daily News.
In addition, he claims that he was told in another incident that he should change his clothes because his white suit and red tie were allegedly "too flashy" for host Erin Burnett. Burnett has denied Kane's allegation.
Kane claims that his straight co-workers got away with breaking numerous rules such as allegedly drinking alcohol at work without any penalties.
CNN issued the following statement regarding Kane's lawsuit and allegations.
"We haven't seen the lawsuit. The EEOC dismissed his claim finding no violations."
However, Kane says he got the right to sue letter from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after he was fired from CNN in June.
