Cleveland Cavaliers Roster 2014 News, Rumors: Lebron James' Ex-Teammate Shaquille O'Neal Breaks Silence After Kevin Love Trade (VIDEO)
Lebron James' former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Shaquille 'Shaq' O'Neal revealed his thoughts on what will happen to his ex-team from Ohio, the Knicks, and the rest of the Eastern Conference in this upcoming season.
"LeBron [James] is the best player in the game and he changes teams, and now he's still part of a powerhouse, another Big 3," said O'Neal on Monday at an event sponsored by Reebok on Rucker Park in Harlem, New York, according to a report by the NY Daily News.
Shaq said, "You have Kevin Love averaging 25 (points) and 15 rebounds, along with Kyrie (Irving) coming into his own as an All-Star and LeBron, who is the most unselfish star in the league? That's nice."
The former NBA center also gave his thoughts of the New York Knicks' upcoming season led by Team President Phil Jackson (who was previously O'Neal's head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers in the late 1990's to early 2000's).
"Phil re-signed Carmelo, changed his point guard and he brought in a guy in D-Fish who understands the Triangle offense," said O'Neal, "I love Fish [aka Knicks new head coach Derek Fisher], he's a good friend of mine, and has a lot of respect around the league, but now the Triangle has to be implemented, understood, respected, followed and loved. Carmelo and the other guys all have to buy into it."
O'Neal recalled how difficult it was to learn Jackson's trademark Triangle offense, before he won three consecutive NBA titles with Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher and the Lakers from 2000-2002.
"My first couple of months (with the Lakers), I hated the Triangle. But once we embraced it, we took off. It's all on Carmelo's shoulders. When you're a superstar, it's all on your shoulders. Will he step up to the challenge of bringing New York back to prominence? We shall see. But they are definitely good enough to compete for a (playoff) spot in the East," said O'Neal.
However, the three NBA Finals MVP (and four NBA Champion) does believe the Knicks championship drought (since 1973) will end this upcoming season.
"The Knicks should be better, but I don't see anybody beating Cleveland. If they're clicking on all cylinders, I don't see anybody in the East beating them in the playoffs," said O'Neal.
