Cleveland Cavaliers NBA News, Rumors 2014: Cavs Draft Will Cherry & Hire New Coach Dave Blatt
The 2014 - 2015 NBA season began on October 28, 2014 and there will be 82 games and 30 teams playing. The NBA Draft took place on June 26 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the Cleveland Cavaliers won the #1 pick for the second year in a row.
They chose Andrew Wiggins, the second Canadian player to be selected as the # 1 pick. He is 19 years-old and played college basketball for the University of Kansas.
The Cavaliers also hired a new coach, Dave Blatt, this year. A former professional basketball player himself, he began coaching in the early '90s.
In addition, the Cavaliers signed free agent point guard Will Cherry, who will be replacing A.J. Price. The deal with 23-year-old Cherry is a two-year, partially guaranteed contract.
Cherry, who is 6-1, was undrafted out of the University of Montana, where he is seventh on their all-time scoring list. Last season, he played for the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League, which is the Cavaliers' D-League affiliate. There, he averaged 11.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 18 games.
Last summer, Cherry played for the Cavaliers' Summer League squad and averaged 12.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists with players like Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennet on the roster.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have played two games so far this season. They lost to the Knicks 95-90 on October 30 and defeated the Bulls 114 - 108 on October 31. Their next game will be on November 4, when they will play the Portland Trailblazers. The game starts at 10 pm EST.
