Cleveland Cavaliers NBA News: Cavs Pick Up 2016 Option for Mozgov, Confident James and Love Will Return
Fresh off a an inspiring playoff run that saw them push the Golden State Warriors to six games in the Finals despite an extremely depleted lineup, the Cleveland Cavaliers have made their first move of the offseason by picking center Timofey Mozgov's $5 million option for the next season.
Mozgov, who was acquired in a mid-season trade in January from the Denver Nuggets for two first-round picks, helped turn the Cavs defense around by giving them a rim-protecting big man they sorely lacked.
The 7'1" center averaged a career high 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds in 45 regular season starts in 2014-2015, and started 20 playoff games norming 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds.
As noted by an Associated Press report, Cavs head coach David Blatt credited the arrival of Mozgov, along with guards J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert for the turnaround of the Cleveland season, which had a 19-20 record in mid-January.
There will be more pressing issues for the Cavs after taking care of Mozgov as a number of the players on their roster will become free agents, while LeBron James and Kevin Love both have opt-out options.
James signes a two-year deal last summer for $42.2 million with the ability to opt-out after just one season. The AP reports that last week Cavs general manager David Griffin said he expects both James and Love to opt out of their contracts. He is confident, though, of both players re-signing with the Cleveland team that came close to winning a championship.
"I think everybody who has the potential to opt out in this climate probably will, and I anticipate that we've created the kind of environment and culture that they want to be part of. I have no reason to believe that any of those players don't want to be back, quite frankly," Griffin said.
