Christ Out of Christmas? Atheist Group Incites Times Square Billboard War with Christian Evangelicals
Last Christmas, a New York City billboard in Times Square from the American Atheist group showed Santa Clause and a crucified Jesus Christ. The billboard read, "Keep the Merry, Loose the Myth," in an effort to share their take on the meaning of the holiday with the masses.
At the start of the holidays this year, creationist launched a response in the form of a giant billboard sign proclaiming, "To all of our atheist friends: Thank God, you're wrong." These billboards were posted in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, CNN reports. The group behind these signs is the evangelical group, Answers in Genesis.
AiG wanted to reach out to people in secularized areas of the country and engage them in a "friendly" way, according to the New York Times. American Atheist has since retaliated launching a 15-second digital billboard that reads, "Who needs Christ during Christmas?"
"This season is a great time of year for a hundred reasons - none of them having to do with religion," said American Atheist's President David Silverman.
MRCTV's Dan Joseph hit the ground at Times Square to ask New Yorkers for their thoughts on the billboard. New Yorkers just zipped through the streets barely noticing the billboard, others were appalled, but most of them stated that it'd be a bad idea to take Christ out of Christmas, he reported.
Staten Island State Senator Andrew Lanza said he found the digital billboard - which claims the "true meaning" of Christmas "hateful and malicious," and went so far as to compare the organization behind it to the Nazis.
"Religious persecution of the kind that similarly lead to the Holocaust began with small evil baby steps of ridicule and hatred of the religious beliefs of others," Lanza added.
Freedom From Religion Foundation has also gotten involved in the billboard battle, as they have been posting Billboards throughout the streets of the City with their take on the season as well.
Unfortunately, all of the back and forth takes the Merry out of Christmas, and the reason for the season.
