Gonzalo Jara News: Chile Footballer Banned for Remainder of 2015 Copa America

Chile is in a good position to win the 2015 Copa America after beating Uruguay 1-0 in Thursday's quarterfinal matchup, but they will have to try and win the tournament without Gonzalo Jara, who picked up a three-ban match for poking his finger up Uruguay's Edinson Cavani's backside.

Jara was not penalized during the match, but provoked Cavani into reacting, which got the striker sent off for getting his second yellow card. The Paris Saint-Germain player raised his hands towards Jara head, and appeared to slap the Chilean, which was followed by Jara dropping to the ground. Cavani was booked earlier in the match for abusing the referee's assistant.

Copa America announced that apart from being banned for three matches due to unsportsmanlike conduct, Jara was also fined $7,500.

But that may just be the beginning of Jara's troubles as his German club Mainz has threatened to sell him this summer after the incident.

"We do not tolerate that. More than the prod, however, it is what comes afterwards that makes me angry. I hate theatrics more than anything," Mainz sporting director said of Jara's antics that feigned he was slapped by Cavani

"He knows that if an offer comes in, he can go."

Jara has had a history of similar incidents. Back in 2013, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez was sent off from a World Cup qualifier for punching Jara in the face after being provoked by the Chilean. His career has also seen a slew of disciplinary problems during his stints at Brighton, Nottingham Forest, and West Brom. He left the Hawthorns for Mainz around this time last year.

Chile moves on to face Peru in the semifinals on Monday. In the other semifinal, Argentina takes on a Paraguay squad that is looking to win its first ever Copa America.
