Celestial Events August 2014: New Moon Dates
August has been an interesting month in terms of celestial happenings, as there have been plenty of sights to see by star gazers all over the globe.
On August 18, there will be a conjunction between Venus and Jupiter. Conjunctions are considered to be rare events wherein two or more celestial bodies appear to be very close to each other in the night sky.
On this day, these two planets will appear near to each other, about a quarter of a degree apart. They will also have the Cancer constellation near them, about one degree away. This occurrence can be spotted just before sunrise.
On the 25th of August, there will be a new moon. The moon will be positioned directly between the Sun and the Earth and will not be visible from land. This phase will happen at 14:13 UTC.
This is considered to be the best time to observe objects from the sky such as galaxies and star clusters since there is no interference from the moon.
On the 29th, there will be the opposing Neptune. The blue planet will be at its closest proximity to the Earth on this day. The Sun will also be able to highlight the planet as it reflects its rays.
It is said that it is the best time to take a photo of Neptune. It will only appear as a blue dot in the sky, but more powerful telescopes can capture a more vibrant image.
