Casey Kasem Net Worth, Heirs: 'Shaggy' From 'Scooby-Doo' Survived By Children (VIDEO)
Casey Kasem, one of the most recognizable voice actors and radio hosts of all time has died, igniting messages of condolence on social media sites and forums around the globe. Casey Kasem leaves behind his estate worth approximately $80 million, which is believed to be going to his family, consisting of his second wife Jean Thompson and his children Liberty, Kerri, Julie and Mike Kasem.
Casey Kasem was born as Kemal Amin Kasem in Detroit, Michigan on April 27, 1932, and started his legendary career in radio as a DJ/announcer for the Armed Forces Radio Korea Network when he was drafted in the Korean War, 1952.
Known best for his role as Norville "Shaggy" Rogers in the legendary animated series "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!" from 1969 to 1971. Kasem has reprised his role as Shaggy in multiple spinoffs from the series including "The Scooby-Doo Show" (1976-1978), "Laff-A-Lympics" (1977-1980), "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo" (1979-1980) and "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" (1988-1991) to name a few.
In addition, the star is also remembered for being the iconic radio host of "American Top 40" from 1970-1988. He would return to the radio show a decade later in 1998 until he retired in 2004. Kasem's "American Top 40" successor Ryan Seacrest expressed his remorse for his fallen friend and colleague.
"It's a sad day for the broadcasting community and for radio listeners around the world. When I was a kid, I would listen to Casey Kasem's AT40 show every weekend, and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ. So when decades later I took over his AT40 countdown show, it was a surreal moment. Casey had a distinctive friendly on-air voice, and he was just as affable and nice if you had the privilege to be in his company. He'll be greatly missed by all of us," said Seacrest in a statement, according to CBS News.
Kasem was previously married to Linda Myers (1972-1979) and fathered Kerri, Julie and Mike Kasem in that first marriage. He later married Jean Thompson (1956-61), and fathered Liberty Jean Kasem. Kasem is survived by his four children, son Mike and daughters Liberty, Kerri and Julie.
When he passed away on June 15, 2014, he was 82 years old.
