Calling All Gamers: Nintendo 2DS Launch Date, Price, and Specs. The Cheaper Alternative?

Nintendo announced the release of its new and more affordable 2DS, which is just a re-make of its 3DS model. The 2DS will play all the same games that the 3DS model plays, but it will only be in 2D instead of 3D. The handheld console will keep all the 3DS hardware such as the dual screens, wiFi, and the infamous touch-screen.

The dual screen however, has been reported to not be dual, but instead be a layer of plastic that has been placed where the original top screen on 3DS is located. This technique is used to lower the cost of the handset in addition to the removal of the glassed-free 3D display option.

The 2DS will have mono speakers instead of the traditional stereo speakers you see on the 3DS model, but it will have a headphone jack that will output stereo audio. The handheld device is targeted towards younger gamers and anyone looking for an affordable alternative to buying the 3DS.

The 2DS will include a 4GB memory card and launch in the multi-colors of black and red and black and blue. The handheld game is expected to hit stores October 12 in the U.S. for $129.99.
