California Fruit Recall For Contaminated Produce: June 1 to July 17 Fruit May Contain Harmful Bacteria
A national recall of Wawona Packing Co. produce has been instated as it is believed that the fruits in question have been contaminated with a certain kind of bacteria.
The bacteria on the fruit, known as Listeria monocytogenes, can cause a listeriosis infection. The symptoms of the illness includes high fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches and nausea.
According to CNN, the Cutler, California produce company has made the recall national, as they do not know which stores have received the contaminated fruit.
The recall was initiated after scientists found the presence of the aforementioned bacteria on company fruits such as nectarines, peaches, plums and pluots. Wawona reportedly coordinated with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct the recall and investigation.
Fruit issued to stores from June 1 to July 12 has potential to be harmful, and is the target of the recall. However, it has also been reported that five days have been tacked on to that, making July 17 the cut-off date.
As it stands, the Wawona Packing Company is no longer shipping their produce out of the Cutler facility.
On a positive note, even before the recall was ordered, no individual had been reported ill from consuming the fruit in question. The company is also asking for consumer cooperation, and advises them to be on the look out for the "rotten fruit."
