'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 Release Date: Final Eight Episode Season Set for September 7

Fans of 'Boardwalk Empire' will be excited to learn that Season 5 is set to air on HBO this September 7. However, viewers will have to say goodbye to their favorite gangsters eight episodes after that date, as the fifth season, is also the final season.

While there is no definitive reason as to why the show is closing its doors after this installment, many speculate that low rating are at the heart of the problem. This comes as a surprise, as the fourth season did well on the charts, but apparently not as well as other HBO hit programs.

Beyond that, the creator of the popular 1920s drama, Terence Winter, is looking to produce another show, this time it's a drama set in the '70s. Rumor has it that the new series will revolve around rock and roll music. Also, sources say Martin Scorsese might be involved in the show, as well as Mick Jagger, who would be a producer.

Other rumors claim that Bobby Cannavale, who appeared in Season 3 of 'Boardwalk Empire' as crazy Gyb Rosetti, will be the leading man in the new Terence Winter series. However, no official word has been released about any of these rumors.

Stepping back into 'Boardwalk Empire' the final season will consist of eight episodes. This time around, the spotlight will be set on Nucky Thompson who remembers his days in Atlantic City and tries to scheme up plans for a soon to be post-Prohibition era.

On a point of interest, show-runners for 'Boardwalk Empire' promise an unforgettable series finale, where each and every character will be met with judgement for their actions.
