Blackberry Passport Release Date, Specs: Company Set to Launch Odd-Looking Smartphone on Sept. 24

Despite lagging behind in competition in the smartphone market, BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion, continues to launch its own smartphone lines. The latest offering from this Canadian smartphone manufacturer is called the BlackBerry Passport, which is scheduled for a September 24 release.

BlackBerry has already started sending out invites for three events the company will be hosting simultaneously in three different cities in three countries: Toronto (Canada), London (England) and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).

While Blackberry continues to rely on their QWERTY phone lines, a lot rides on the odd-looking Blackberry Passport to keep the company afloat. Though the device has yet to be launched, GSMArena has already posted a spec list as well as a detailed review for potential customers.

The BlackBerry Passport will come with a 4.5-inch LCD square display having a 1440 x 1440 resolution. It will be available with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The upcoming Blackberry handset will be approximately as large as the majority of standard sized smartphones, and will also be almost as wide, including its unusual-looking rhomboid profile.

As far as the specs of the smartphone are concerned, the BlackBerry Passport will be packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.2GHz Krait 400 processor, an Adreno 330 graphics processor, 3GB of RAM, in addition to 32GB of internal memory storage, which is expandable with a microSD card.

Even though the phone will have a 4.5-inch 1:1 ratio screen, it will come with the signature Blackberry QWERTY keypad. The keypad also serves as a secondary touchpad which will enable users to use some gestures such as deleting words quickly by swiping to the left.

However, the Passport will not be an inexpensive phone, as the report in GSMArena says that the smartphone will come for around $760.
