‘Big Hero 6’ Premiere Date: In Theaters November 7, Aims To Break Stereotypes
Disney Animation Studio, in partnership with Marvel, is set to release its new animated superhero movie, 'Big Hero 6' in theaters Friday, Nov. 7, with a mission to combat stereotypes and showcase diversity.
'Big Hero 6' is set in San Fransokyo, a futuristic mash-up of San Francisco and Tokyo, and tells the story of a young robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada and the large inflatable robot, named Baymax, who was created by Hiro's late older brother before his passing.
Thanks to Baymax's skills and Hiro's technical know-how, the two of them and their friends eventually band together to become superheroes and look after their city.
Disney and Marvel Comics, alongside directors Chris Williams and Don Hall, plan to disregard all racial and gender stereotypes, tackle social issues and put diversity on the front lines in their new movie.
Williams and Hall talked about wanting to showcase, a world where the lead hero could be biracial, like Hiro who is Japanese and American; where intelligent and bold young girls of color "take charge", such as the characters Go Go Tomago and Honey Lemon; and where appearances can be deceiving and the people thought of as looking like "scary-and-silent henchmen" could be a robotics geniuses, such as the character Wasabi.
"One of the things that I am proud of is the fact that we do have this very diverse cast. In one sense, we don't make a big deal out of it. The characters are certainly not defined in any way by their race or gender and I'm very proud of that," Williams said.
'Big Hero 6' is projected to rake in $55 million in its opening weekend. It comes at the heels of Disney's 2013 film, 'Frozen', which opened to $67 million. It is also the latest animated superhero film after Pixar's 'The Incredibles' which grossed $631 million.
'Big Hero 6' features the voices of Ryan Potter as Hiro Hamada, Scott Adsit as Baymax, Jamie Chung as GoGo Tamago, Damon Wayans Jr. as Wasabi, Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon, T.J. Miller as Fred, and more.
"This gave us a perfect opportunity to create a diverse cast," Hall said in an interview, "When you look outside your window, you go to any city anywhere in America - the world for that matter - and it's a diverse world. Our films should reflect that."
'Big Hero 6' premieres in theaters on Friday, November 7.
