'The Bible' Miniseries on History Channel Rewrites History
The Bible miniseries on History Channel wrapped up with the final episode on Easter Sunday. As usual the ratings were impressive, even better than the previous weeks'. Featuring scenes from the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, The Bible attracted 11.7 million viewers, 14 percent higher than the 10.3 million from the previous week.
The Bible success has encouraged other networks to jump on the bandwagon. ABC aired The Ten Commandments (the movie that inspired producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey to create The Bible miniseries) starring Charlton Heston and somehow managed to bring in 6 million viewers the same night.
Hollywood has succumbed to Bible fever as well.
The Motion Picture Corporation of America is planning a six-hour miniseries titled Jesus of Nazareth. The Bible spinoff has a reported $20 million budget.
"We believe the audience continues to have a hunger for life- and faith-affirming films," Michael Landon Jr., a Christian producer and writer for Jesus of Nazareth told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview.
Keeping it all in the family, Jesus of Nazareth will also be co-written by screenwriter Brian Bird who worked with Downey as a writer for five seasons on Touched By AN Angel.
The Bible, which broke TV records after attracting 13 million viewers on its March 3rd premiere, was the must-watch event on television in spring 2013.
