'The Bible' Miniseries on History Channel: "America Is Seeking Spirituality"
History Channel's new miniseries The Bible is coming to an end on Sunday. The 10-hour docudrama have proved to be the must watch TV event of spring this year, beating ratings juggernauts The Walking Dead and American Idol.
Critics on the other hand have not been as kind to the show that was created by Mark Burnett (Survivor) and Roma Downey (Touched By An Angel).
British national newspaper The Guardian wrote: "Everyone - believers, nonbelievers, anyone who appreciates a good story or TV series - deserves better."
Even Christians are taking aim at The Bible.
"There is usually a lot of junk in these kinds of projects," says Rev. Marcy Nicholas of Grace United Methodist Church. "Bathsheba really doesn't really have a lot to say when David desires her. In the biblical text she has a crisis of morality."
Even though The Bible may casually jump from story to story and has licensed itself to juice up some of the drama (gladiator angels anyone?), some in the Christian community believe the viewership alone is a positive sign.
"Studies have shown that America is seeking spirituality. All studies in the last ten years have pointed out that people are searching and have a thirst for spirituality in their own life. The Bible confirms what those studies have shown. And, yes, I have seen an increase in church attendance during this Lenten season. Our St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg was packed on Ash Wednesday. It indicates a thirst for religion, to me," commented Harrisburg Catholic Diocese Bishop McFadden when asked about his thoughts on The Bible ratings.
What do you think? Is The Bible informing a new generation of believers, or is it just another Hollywood gimmick out to make a few bucks.
Tune in Sunday for The Bible miniseries finale on History Channel at 8/7c.
