'Ben-Hur' Movie Remake Set for 2016; Mark Burnett and Roma Downey Sign on as Producers
Roma Downey and Mark Burnett have continued to pave the way for Christian inspired media and are now participating in the highly anticipated remake of Academy Award winning film Ben-Hur.
While still riding the wave of success with "The Bible Miniseries" and the theatrical release "Son of God" this past spring, the couple have signed on to be producers for the film along with Sean Daniels (The Mummy) and Joni Levin (The Way Back). Timur Bekmamtov who is best known for "Wanted" and "Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter" is set to direct a screenplay originally written by Keith Clarke and had revisions by John Ridley who wrote the screenplay for another Academy Award Winning film, "12 Years A Slave." Together they create quite a rather unique team.
Ben-Hur is based on the 1880 novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ" by Lee Wallace. It is about a Jewish Prince who was betrayed and sold into slavery. His life was later changed by his interactions with Jesus Christ. The story is heavy with themes of betrayal, vengeance and forgiveness. It was originally made into a silent film in the 1920s, but most are familiar with the classic epic film starring Charlton Heston as the titular character and the director William Wyler.
Many are concerned that with remaking such an epic classic it will simply not be up to par. However, the 1959 film won a record-breaking 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. Due to the spiritual nature of the story, it only seems a natural fit to bring along Roma Downey and Mark Burnett who have heralded a successful revival of both biblical and faith inspired television and films.
"Ben-Hur" will be hitting theaters February of 2016, USA Today reported.
