Bellator MMA News: Mike Richman Suspended Two Years After Failed Test, Gonzales Levied 90-Day Ban
Two Bellator fighters were suspended following failed post-fight drug tests. As reported by MMA Junkie, bantamweight Mike Richman and welterweight Fernando Gonzales both failed their test following last month's Bellator 137 event, the California State Athletic Commission confirmed.
According to CSAC executive director Andy Foster, Richman, who lost a decision to Eduardo Dantas, tested positive for a performance enhancing drug, while Gonzales, who won his fight against Curtis Millender via submission tested positive for marijuana.
"We've been informed that these fighters will be subject to suspensions and fines. We here at Bellator stand behind the commission 100 percent in this process and remain committed to keeping MMA clean of substance abuse," Bellator said in a statement.
According to Foster, Richman will be suspended for two years and fined $2,500. His suspension is longer than the usual nine months to one year suspensions previously levied, and is part of the commission's tougher stance on banned substances.
Gonzales, for his part, will be fined $1,500 and suspended for 90 days. This is his second positive testing for marijuana.
Wrote Richman in a Facebook post, "In regards to my positive test results for an Anabolic Steroid, I want to say that I lost the integrity in myself and the integrity of this sport. I will not sit here and deny that I took it or act like I didn't know what I was taking or blame it on someone else. I am a cheat, plain and simple and there is no excuse or reason that is valid enough to dispute the reasons why I cheated the sport and myself by using it."
"I take full responsibility in my actions and the decisions I made. I also deserve the punishment the CA state athletic commission brought down upon me," he also wrote after apologizing to everyone involved.
According to MMA Junkie, Bellator has confirmed that both fighters remain under contract with the promotion.
