'Batman vs Superman' Movie Release Date Brought Forward, No Longer Clashes With 'Captain America 3'
Recently, Warner Bros. and DC announced a schedule change regarding the upcoming blockbuster film, 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'. The new film will no longer rival Marvel's 'Captain America 3' on May 6, 2016, but instead release earlier, on March 25, 2016.
According to Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman, it's a good move for the studio to move the date up so the film will be one of the first blockbusters of 2016, "We'll be the first one up [in 2016], which is very important, and we'll have six weeks before Captain America comes in," He said.
However, some speculate that bumping up the release date won't really matter in the long run when it comes to how much money the movies will rake in. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Rentrak said in regards to which movie has the advantage now that the dates have been changed, "Nobody wins in that scenario."
He also mentioned that since fans stand a better chance to catch both films, financial gain from both camps should be equal.
Fellman on the other hand thinks the earlier release date for 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' gives WB and DC the advantage in terms of ticket sales, "The reality now is there really isn't a bad week to open a movie. If you look at the summer box office this year, you can see that there were so many movies, one after the other. You can start with Spider-Man, two weeks later Godzilla, and then Maleficent, and then Edge of Tomorrow, and then Jump Street and Transformers. And the one thing they all had in common, not one of them did over $250 million," Fellman stated.
On a side note, the Batman v Superman film is rumored to be released in 3D, however this remains unconfirmed.
