Barcelona Transfer News Latest: Latest on Luis Suarez, Plans for Mathieu and Rakitic to Replace Retired Puyol
Luis Suarez has just left Liverpool to join Barcelona for the next premier league. Barcelona however, are far from done with their summer transfers.
The new manager, Luis Enrique is looking to create a solid line-up in preparation for the next season. One of the major areas of concern for the team is its defense. The club's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has already confirmed its bid for Valencia's center-back Jeremy Mathieu.
Valencia has already undergone talks with Barcelona and are asking for €20 million for the 30-year old player. A lot of analysts are skeptical of the trade because of the player's age and actual field position.
Mathieu's age will only provide a short-term solution to Barcelona's ailing defense concerns. His experience in playing La Liga for Valencia since 2009 will prove useful to fill in the position that recently retired Barcelona veteran, Carles Puyol, had left empty. A more pressing concern is that Mathieu is not really a center-back, but a converted left-back.
Valencia has been adamant with their €20 million offer for Mathieu and would refuse to listen to any other Barcelona offers. The 30-year old La Liga veteran is however, eager to leave Valencia for Barcelona. Mathieu has felt that five-years of loyalty has already earned him the right to freely move to other clubs.
Aside from Mathieu, Enrique has also acquired the Croatian playmaker Ivan Rakitic. Not only will Rakitic be essential in strengthening Barcelona's ailing defense, he could also play the role of a would-be-replacement for Puyol.
