'Bad Christian Great Savior' Released by Emery Founders; Controversial Book Aims to Identify 'Failures that Plague Today's Christians'

BADCHRISTIAN, GREATSAVIOR was written by Emery members Matt Carter and Toby Morrell, and Pastor Joey Svendsen. The book touches on intimate details of the author's lives and shares their opinion on problems within today's Christian society.

In the book they expose their own sexual sin, depression, betrayal, anger, and alcohol abuse. This occurred while they lived a second life: attending church, leading worship, and appearing to be as "good" as possible. Over 1,500 pre-sale copies of the book have already been sold according to the press release. BADCHRISTIAN, GREATSAVIOR's publishing was crowd-funded by BADCHRISTIAN's fans and tripled its funding goal.

The book can be downloaded on Amazon for the Kindle here.

"This is not a book of Theology. This is not Christian Inspiration. This is Matt, Toby, and Joey telling it like they see it; that you are worse than you think you are, and Jesus is better than you think He is," an excerpt from the book reads.

The authors are also challenging the modern church and identifying failures that plague today's Christians. BADCHRISTIAN, GREATSAVIOR feels the church is playing it safe by allowing the real sin Christians struggle with to remain "private" and hidden. BADCHRISTIAN aims to move Christian conversations beyond trivial topics, and on to the things that bring glory to God when we live more transparent, honest, and open lives.

"If the crux of life is based upon Him and the cross, can we just sit in an air-conditioned room once a week and then live the rest of our lives separate from each other in our own tiny kingdom?" another excerpt reads.

"We liken the pursuit of being a 'good Christian' to what the Bible would label as being a good Pharisee. We prefer to label followers of Jesus as Bad Christians who fortunately have a Great Savior. We also believe that Jesus grows, changes, and makes people better. As Jesus pursues change in our hearts, our most effective response is BEING HONEST and transparent with our weaknesses and struggles. Through Bad Christian, this is what we intend to personally do-and encourage others to do the same," they wrote in their initial announcement last year.

BADCHRISTIAN was formed in 2013 by Matt Carter, Toby Morrell, and Joey Svendsen. Matt and Toby are worship leaders and founders of Emery, a successful touring rock band that has sold over 500,000 records and toured in 49 states. Joey is a campus Pastor and Counselor at Seacoast Church.
