Austin Price, Teen Dies Playing Chicken With Train On Train Tracks
A seemingly harmless (by kids standards) game of 'chicken' with some teenage boys took a tragic turn on turn.
Austin Price, 15, was playing on the train tracks with two friends in Alameda County. They were playing chicken with trains, which includes standing on the tracks until the trains were close and then jumping out the way in the final seconds. Price mistimed his jump when one northbound Capitol Corridor train came down the tracks and he was struck by the train at about 6 p.m. on Thursday evening.
San Lorenzo High School was the high school that Price attended and the student community has been very shaken up by his death. The students have said he was as a kind, caring and sweet boy who always put others before himself.
The Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy, April Luckett, says the other two teenagers were unhurt in the accident and were able to give insight as to what went wrong.
School Principal Tovi Scruggs has said, "It's an ongoing concern. Tragedies don't happen frequently, but we know the tracks are not staying empty," according to The San Francisco Chronicle. Reportedly students say that 'chicken' is a very common game that students play all the time on the train tracks.
The locals report that many people in the community walk near the tracks, including students from the high school. Some have expressed concerns that it was unsafe, unfortunately nothing had been changed before this tragic event. New community rules regardless the train tracks are sure to be put in place in this aftermath.
