Atheist Richard Dawkins: 'Stranger Rape' Is Worse Than 'Date Rape' - Twitter Users React Angrily
The God Delusion author Richard Dawkins' recent remarks regarding rape and pedophilia have created some controversy for the world famous atheist.
"Date rape is bad. Stranger rape at knifepoint is worse. If you think that's an endorsement of date rape, go away and learn how to think," wrote Dawkins on Twitter on July 29.
In addition, the 73-year-old Professor further expressed his views on morality in another message regarding the issue of pedophilia.
"Mild pedophilia is bad. Violent pedophilia is worse. If you think that's an endorsement of pedophilia, go away and learn how to think," tweeted Dawkins.
Furthermore, Dawkins then explained his theory on the issue of stealing in another Twitter post.
"Stealing £1 is bad. Stealing an old lady's life savings is worse. How DARE you rank them? Stealing is stealing. You're vile, appalling," wrote Dawkins on Twitter.
As a result of his multiple comments, Dawkins received some criticism from people who did not agree with his opinion on the aforementioned issues:
"Again, rape is a legal term, there are no degrees - I think you need to be more careful in your terminology, Richard," wrote Twitter user The OSC to Dawkins.
Another Twitter user named Nutmeg echoed The OSC's sentiments regarding Dawkins' previous comments in reference to rape.
"I always thought rape was forced sex, whether the perp is a 'friend' or stranger. I think date rape should not be a thing," tweeted Nutmeg.
After being condemned by various people on social media for his previous comments, Dawkins addressed his critics in another Twitter post.
"What I have learned today is that there are people on Twitter who think in absolutist terms, to an extent I wouldn't have believed possible," tweeted Dawkins.
In another interview, National Association for People Abused in Childhood's Chief Executive Peter Saunders issued the following statement regarding Dawkins' controversial comments:
"What staggers me is that for such a self-proclaimed intelligent man to even talk in these terms is to completely miss the point," said Saunders to the Daily Mail. "There is no such thing as mild or serious pedophilia. There is child abuse, and the consequence for the victim is that they can be scarred for life."
