Toronto Raptors NBA 2015 News: As Many As Four Teams Could Pursue Raptors’ Lou Williams
The Toronto Raptors could be hard pressed to retain the services of their reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams as multiple reports have come out that at least for teams have expressed strong interest in the dynamic scorer. According to RealGM, the teams reportedly interested in Williams' services include the Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Knicks, and the Brooklyn Nets.
The Raptors and the 28-year-old guard have reportedly expressed mutual interest, but the bidding that would commence should
Toronto and Williams not strike a deal early in free agency could prove too pricey for the Raptors.
As noted by RealGM, as one of the most potent individual scorers on the market, Williams could conceivably command a three-year deal worth $27 million, or four years for as much as $35 million.
Williams was a key cog for the Raptors this past season, averaging a career-best 15.5 points, two rebounds, and two assists per game in just 25.2 minutes off the bench and went on to win the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award. His breakout season was especially impressive having come back from an ACL tear in 2013.
While his numbers dipped in the playoffs to 12.8 points per game during Toronto's four-game sweep at the hands of the Washington Wizards, Williams at times was the only one apart from Demar Derozan that was able to manufacture shots against a hyper-focused defense.
Raptors GM Masai Ujiri has a lot to think of regarding his roster following a season that saw them get off to a good start, but progressively play worse as the season dragged on. The $8 million-a-year price tag on an explosive, yet relatively inefficient, scoring punch off the bench may be too much for the Raptors at this point. And the heightened interest from multiple teams could make it just that much harder for the Raps to retain Williams' services.
