Apple iWatch Release Date, Update: Will Apple’s Wearable Device Be Entirely Dependent on iPhones?

Cupertino-based tech titan Apple has several things lined up for 2015, including the release of its ambitious Apple Watch and the next smartphone - dubbed the iPhone 7.

While Apple CEO Tim Cook did mention that the Apple Watch will be reliant on the iPhones, but did not offer details about the dependence of its upcoming wearable device on the smartphone. A report in the New York Post has, however, hinted that the Apple Watch will rely on the iPhones to a great extent.

Meanwhile, many developers are of the view that the upcoming Apple Watch will possibly be completely dependent on the smartphone. Interestingly, many of these developers have already received technical details to create apps for the Apple Watch, reports Latin Post.

The website quotes Nick Van Wiggeren, a software engineer at Digital Ocean, which offers cloud support service to developers, saying "It's virtually 99 percent dependent on having an iPhone to link it up to," adding, "If you're more than 20 feet away from your phone, there's a chance you won't get e-mail notifications."

However, since the Apple Watch will be functioning in close association with the iPhone, it suggests that the device will have a longer battery life.

Meanwhile, Mac Rumors reports that the Cupertino-based tech firm is likely to discontinue production of the multicolored iPhone 5c and the older 4s. Quoting a report in the Taiwan-based Industrial and Commercial Times, the website reports that Apple is contemplating to stop producing these earlier iPhone models sometime in the mid-2015. At the same time, the report says that Wistron and Foxconn, a major supplier to Apple, will be reducing iPhone 5c production. Another report from KGI Securities states that production of the iPhone 5c will be discontinued by 2014 end.

The KGI report further reveals that demand for the latest iPhones like the 6 and 6 Plus has resulted in a decline of sales of the 5c and especially the 4s. While it is projected that the demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will see a significant rise during the holiday season, the sale of the earlier iPhone models is likely to remain stagnant or even decline further.
