Apple iOS Waterproof Scam: iPhone and iPad Users Fall For Fake Ad Claiming iOS 7 Makes Device Waterproof [PHOTOS]

The newest prank that Apple users have been falling for is a fake ad claiming that iOS 7 makes your device waterproof. As one can guess, software updates cannot waterproof a device. The Daily Mail wrote, "The advertisement - which has appeared on social media networks like Facebook and Twitter - is believed to have started on the online forum 4Chan. It shows an iPad and iPhone 5S displayed next to the following tagline: 'A smart - switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry.' The advertisement also claims the waterproofing feature is 'covered by Apple's warranty policy.'"

4Chan has been responsible for several other pranks in the past, but this one may be the most widespread and costly trick yet. Several duped iPhone users took to Twitter to complain about their newly destroyed devices. These tweets were widely circulated on 4Chan and fueled the fire for more tricks such as this one.

iOS 7.0.1 was just released this past week to fix several bugs with the original update. The new iOS 7 update has been accepted with mixed reviews. The waterproofing update, activated by a "smart switch," was not one of the updates included in iOS 7.
