'Ant-Man' Spoilers, News: De-Aging Sequence For Michael Douglas Explained
'Ant-Man' surprised viewers for a multitude of reasons, but what commonly brings fans back to these Marvel movies are the remarkable visuals.
Aside from all the shrinking scenes featured in the movie, one of the more impressive sequences was the digitally de-aging scene at the beginning of the movie with Michael Douglas. The scene was a flashback event, meaning the character had to depict a much younger Hank Pym.
It was recently revealed that VFX company Lola performed the work to make this possible. They were also responsible for the work done in 'Captain America: The First Avenger' that made Chris Evans' Steve Rogers' skinny body.
In an interview with Vulture, Lola supervisor Trent Claus explained the process:
"They asked for advice for what they could do when they were shooting that could aid us, which is very much appreciated. We put our two cents in, and they did everything we needed right from the start." Claus also revealed that Douglas' past movies were used for reference, although "It made us work harder, because the audience already knew what he looked like at that age; There wasn't a whole lot of leeway."
"What's really important is the way his face moves as he speaks, the way that the muscles in the face have changed over time, the way the skin reacts to those muscles. To sell the effect you have to look at the way [the face] looks in motion."
In an interview with Cinema Blend, director Peyton Reed spoke on how on edge he was about this scene turning out well.
"The single most terrifying visual effect in the movie to me is scene one in the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters with Michael Douglas... If that didn't work, we were screwed, because you're going to be in some weird uncanny valley as a viewer," he said. "'That's terrible. This doesn't work. I'm out.' You could potentially lose an audience member in the very first scene if that didn't work."
